Volunteer Information
Without the tireless work of volunteers Orientation Week simply wouldn't be possible. Whether this is your first time applying to be an Orientation Volunteer or your fourth, there are ways that everybody can make a significant difference in the lives of new students as they come to University for the first time!
Please only apply for ONE volunteer role. If you are not selected for the position you want the most you will automatically be considered for other volunteer positions.
General Orientation Volunteers (OVs)
General OV positions are open to any student who would like to assist in welcoming our new students to the University of Guelph. All General OVs are affiliated with a Hall Council or OCUS as well as a College or the CSA and are asked to help on Move-in Day, during the Pep Rally and with three events between August 31st and September 8th.
Central Orientation Volunteers
Central OVs are broken into six teams who help make all aspects of Orientation Week happen. Click on the link above to go to the application form which contains details on all of the Central Teams. The six Central OV teams are:
- Box Office: Operate an info desk and ticket sales
- Events: Orientation Week events support and monitoring
- Interhall: Helps Interhall Council run their Orientation Week events
- Sunshine: OV motivation and support
- Truck: Move Orientation Week resources like tables and chairs around
- Sustainability: Ensure that water is distributed and waste is disposed of properly
Residence Orientation Leader (ROL)
ROLs will be partnered up with an RA in the Winter semester of 2013 and then work with them in their community over Orientation Week. This will involve being with the residence community for Move-in night, a variety of key events over Orientation Week and helping at an additional three building-focussed events of the ROLs choice.
Academic Community Builder (ACB)
ACBs will be paired and assigned a group of approximately 50 new students. These groups will meet for approximately half an hour on three occasions over Orientation Week and help students of similar programs to meet eachother and learn some basic academic expecations from the University!
ACBs have the option of volunteering once a week for the first six weeks of the Fall semester as this program will expand to meet the changing needs of new students throughout their first month and a half on campus.
Alumni Orientation Volunteers
Alumni Orientation Volunteers was a team of volunteers officially created in 2010 and has slowly grown throughout the year. In 2013, we're going to see a full force of energetic alumni come back to welcome new students! You will be invited to participate in many of the regular volunteer activities that you have participated in the past, including move-in day and helping with the Pep Rally! If you are interested, please e-mail oweek@uoguelph.ca
START Online Group Leaders (OGL)
OGLs volunteer 3 hours a week throughout the spring and summer to assist incoming students as they prepare for their first year on campus. START Online is our virtual summer orientation program.
